Internet based electronic process supports Institutions of Higher Education with the implementation of the Bologna Process

Stuttgart 24/05/2007

In March 2007 the University of Bristol, the Technische Universität Darmstadt and the Université Toulouse 1 kicked off the e-Nomination procedure as forerunning universities in Europe. With e-Nomination all students studying abroad next year are firstly announced electronically to the European partner institutions. The exchange of information between partners regarding the exchange students takes place in a modern manner through the Internet and no longer by means of letter. Many more European universities are now also using e-Nomination such as the Europa-Universität Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), the Leibniz Universität Hannover und die Université Paris X Nanterre.

By the year 2010 the European universities and colleges must achieve the goal set in Bologna in 1999 of creating a common European Higher Education Area. Whilst the EU promotes the strengthened international mobility of students with its new education programme for Lifelong Learning (LLP), the elimination of mobility obstacles still remains a key issue. Therefore the unification and standardisation of all operational procedures and processes spanning across the universities and countries is crucial for the administration of exchange students. An important fundamental first step in doing so is the e-Nomination procedure which was developed by a work group consisting of 25 European Institutions of Higher Education.

The e-Nomination procedure supports the complete nomination process between partner institutions for all students coming from and going abroad on exchange studies. All the steps of the procedure, from the student nomination to the acknowledgement with details about the application procedure, through to the acceptance or refusal of the exchange students, are carried out electronically. Students are also constantly informed about the status of their applications. This way student services are improved and the International Relations Office can reduce its paperwork and increase its efficiency.

The technical basis for the e-Nomination procedure is the platform www.moveonnet.eu. moveonnet – Higher Education Worldwide, currently contains information about more than 4000 universities and colleges and aims to simplify the exchange of information between International Relations Offices and to serve as a comprehensive source of information for international students. This includes the online publication of university rankings, courses of study available and country specific information. The Internet platform is interactive and the information published on the website is entered and updated by each institution directly in moveonnet.
